Why Squamish?

Squamish is the half-way point between Vancouver and Whistler. Vancouver has over 100 ESL schools in the downtown area alone. Students rarely have the opportunity to speak with “real Canadians”. In a smaller area, such as Squamish, you will be more exposed to the Canadian lifestyle and will have many more opportunities to practice speaking. Since Squamish is only about 1 hour away from Vancouver, of course you will have the opportunity to visit Vancouver as well. Furthermore, Whistler, the future site of the 2010 Winter Olympics and number one ski resort in North America, is about 1 hour north of Squamish. You will have the advantage of being closer to world-class skiing and snowboarding and fresh morning snow! Squamish is known as the “Outdoor Recreation Capital” of Canada and it is a vibrant, growing town definitely worth exploring.

What do tours include? <top>

Tours include accommodations, food, ESL classes, and activities (depending on which camp you sign up for). On weekends, you will have free-time and have the option of going to Vancouver (transportation will be provided), staying in Squamish, or, for an additional cost, skiing/snowboarding (in the winter). Thus, even if you signed up for the Standard Camp, you will have a chance to try skiing or snowboarding.

How is the weather in the winter? Is it cold? <top>

The Vancouver area is the warmest in Canada during the winter. Instead of cold and snow, we get rain. However, most people quickly get used to the rain and enjoy a variety of winter sports and activities. Our snow stays on the mountains (where it belongs!). In the winter, it is possible, to ski/snowboard, hike, scuba dive, kayak, play golf, walk outside, etc. It’s always a good idea to bring warm, water-repellent clothing, but compared to other Canadian cities or compared to Korea in the winter, it is definitely not cold.

Is it possible to scuba dive in the winter? <top>

Yes! In fact, the water temperature in the winter and summer is almost the same. The only difference is the air temperature. The advantage of diving in the winter is the visibility. B.C. water is very rich in nutrients and in the summer the plankton blooms and visibility becomes somewhat limited. In the winter, the water is very clear and the diving is amazing! We always dress warmly for scuba diving and most divers wear either a 7mm wetsuit, hood, gloves, and boots, or a drysuit. Besides, there’s always hot chocolate after diving to warm you up!

Will I have to share a room? What if I come alone? <top>

Our prices are based on double occupancy. If you come alone, that’s OK. We will match you with someone with similar interests and hobbies. Don’t worry. We will do our best to make sure everyone is happy with their living situation. If you really don’t want a roommate, let us know. There is a small additional fee, but we can accommodate you. Of course, with a roommate, you will have more opportunities to practice English and to make friends…
